Fluid Glass: Shaping the Vase

Now that the pattern is closed up, I can begin blowing and shaping the vase. This is a gradual process, as the glass must be reheated again every couple of minutes in the glory hole. In between reheatings, I have about 30-90 seconds before the glass becomes too stiff.
I shape the glass by hand in the beginning, using layers of wet newspaper for protection. The pipe is continually rolled back and forth on my workbench so that gravity doesn't distort the fluid glass. Hot glass must always be in motion. I also use metal tools. Seen here are the jacks. I slowly blow out the vase, small increments at a time in between shaping and reheating.
